Insurance Coverage
Latest content update: 06/01/2016

Decentralized Offices can face a challenging task in finding the best insurance solution, given the many options which are available.  Since insurance companies provide information in different formats, sometimes in a language difficult to fully comprehend, reviewing options may be a challenging task.

The HQ “Non-Medical Insurance” office ([email protected]) is available to help you to review the options and base the selection on the best price for value.

Tips for reviewing insurance:

Understand what type of insurance is required:

  1. Review the Host Country Agreement – This agreement may identify if the Government is responsible for providing insurance coverage for the assets FAO uses (vehicles, computers, office furniture, etc.).
  2. Determine what type of coverage is standard in your country.  You may want to consult with administrators in other UN Organizations or other specialists.  We do not recommend that you consult with the insurance salesperson/company since their salaries are probably sales-based and their job is to sell insurance.
  3. Contact HQ Non-Medical-Insurance ([email protected]) who can respond to any questions you may have.  The Non-Medical-Insurance office can:
    1. Provide general technical assistance on insurance issues;
    2. Review if the proposed insurance coverage is already covered under the corporate policy;
    3. Review and recommend the best options on the market and assist the country office in purchasing the insurance;
    4. Revise contracts proposed by local companies to field offices;
    5. Compare the requested premium with other available offers;
    6. Recommend if insurance is needed to cover a specific risk and the level of coverage necessary.

Vehicle Insurance
Latest content update: 06/01/2016

The only mandatory vehicle coverage at the local level is Third Party Legal Liability (TPLL), also sometimes called Third Party Liability Insurance (TPLI).

The TPLL covers only damages and injuries caused by our vehicles to third parties. It does not cover injuries nor damages to our own staff/vehicles.

Therefore, if FAO staff member/authorized driver is the one who caused the accident, under TPLL the FAO car is not covered by the insurance. Because of this, the Head of Office may wish to purchase additional insurance to cover any damage to FAO vehicles caused by the FAO driver.

In many markets, insurance policies exist to cover damage to FAO vehicles caused by uninsured drivers. These insurance policies may be expensive and it is necessary to consider the age and condition of the vehicle. Non-Medical-Insurance can help assess any options and recommend solutions.

Please note that FAO does have a global vehicle insurance policy that provides contingent liability coverage for third party claims not covered by local insurance. This is a safety net for any insurance needs that are not covered locally. Therefore, please procure Third Party Legal Liability coverage as required.

Property Damage

Latest content update: 06/01/2016

FAO has insurance policies that are formulated to cover the Organization for catastrophic loss.  Given the large number of FAO offices and the limited value of goods in the offices, the FAO global policies were created to focus on major loses with a per occurrence deductible of USD 100,000.  Thus the county office may want to consider procuring a local insurance policy to cover property damage.  The HQ Non-Medical-Insurance office can provide guidance and support.

Please note that the global insurance policy does not cover country offices in case of earthquakes.  Hurricane coverage is included along with coverage for terrorism, theft and robbery, with limitations.  Again, the same high level of deductibles would apply.
