Country Information

Georgia occupies an area of 69 700 sq.km (the population is 5.2 million), with 50 percent of its landmass mountainous and at over 1500 metres. The country ranges from fertile valleys to semi-arid desert and the subtropical coast of the Black Sea.

Georgia remains as a low-income food deficit country (LIFDC). Georgia’s agricultural potential is still impaired by antiquated infrastructure, small size of land plots, lack of skills and inputs, limited access to credit and processing facilities, as well as under-developed market structures. Without alternative employment opportunities in place, subsistence farming remains the lifeline for the majority of Georgia’s rural poor. Agricultural reform, aimed at improving productivity, is still in its starting phases.  .

With substantial investment in technological and infrastructure capacity, Georgia’s agricultural sector has the potential to export different agricultural products ranging from wheat, cereal, soy, cooking oil and maize to nuts, tea, citrus, and herbs. Particularly remarkable is Georgia’s viticulture sector,

The key development priorities comprise macroeconomic stability, governance and civil service reform, infrastructure rehabilitation and investment in social sectors, creating a policy and regulatory environment conductive to private sector development in order to accelerate economic growth. The Government of Georgia declares its commitment to poverty reduction and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
