Ms Shoji, a national of Japan, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Intercultural Communication from the International University of Tokyo, Japan, and a Master of Professional Studies in Development Sociology from Cornell University, United States. She started her career in 1985 as a Junior Professional Officer for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Rabat, Morocco. From 1987 to 1989, she worked as Consultant for UNIDO-IPS, in Tokyo, Japan. From 1989 to 1995, she worked as Desk Officer, Western and Central Africa Bureau, World Food Programme and was a member of the Regional Rwanda Task Force, Rome, Italy. From 1995 to 1997, she was Advisor for the World Food Programme in Kathmandu, Nepal. From 1997 to 2001, Ms Shoji was Assistant to the Deputy Executive Director, World Food Programme, Rome, Italy .In 2001, she was appointed Deputy Director, World Food Programme, Beijing, China. From 2004 to 2007, she served as UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Ms Shoji joined FAO in August 2007 as Chief of the Technical Cooperation Programme Service, Field Operations Division (TCO), Technical Cooperation Department, Rome, Italy. In 2010 she was transferred as FAO Representative in Viet Nam and in December 2012 she was appointed Director of the Office of Support to Decentralization (OSD). Ms Shoji succeeds Mr Sinaceur as FAO Subregional Coordinator for Central Asia.
