Mr Jama, a national of Somalia, holds a B.Sc. in Animal Husbandry from the Somali National University of Mogadishu, Somalia; an M.Sc. in Range Science, and a Ph.D. in Rangeland Ecology and Management, both from Texas A&M University, United States. Mr Jama started his career in 1984 as District Range Officer for the Central Rangeland/Livestock Development Project in the National Rangeland Agency of the Ministry of Livestock, Somalia. During his Doctoral field research study, from 1989 to 1992, he served as a Graduate Associate/Agronomist on Forage/Livestock interactions, International Livestock for Africa, Kaduna, Nigeria. The Graduate Research in Nigeria formed the basis for his dissertation. From 1992 to 1997, Mr Jama served as a graduate student (Ph.D.) and Teaching Assistant in the Department of Rangeland Ecology and Management (World Bank Scholarship) of the Texas A&M University. From 1998 to 2003, he worked as an Assistant Research Scientist/Project Officer, USAID-Global Livestock Collaborative Research Support Programme/Livestock Early Warning System for East Africa, at Texas A&M University. From 2003 to 2006, he was Project Coordinator of the USAID-Global Livestock Collaborative Research Support Programme/Livestock Information Network and Knowledge System for East Africa, Texas A&M University. Mr Jama joined FAO in October 2006 as Livestock Information Advisor, FAO-IGAD Livestock Policy Initiative, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. From April 2007 to November 2007, he was the Chief Technical Advisor a.i./Information Advisor, FAO-IGAD Livestock Policy Initiative in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. From March 2012 to November 2013, he served as Livestock Information and Pastoral Policy Advisor to FAO Regional Initiative in Support of Vulnerable Pastoralists and Agro-pastoralists in the Horn of Africa, and Technical Advisor to the IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative, at the IGAD Secretariat based in Djibouti, Republic of Djibouti. Mr Jama succeeds Mr Abari as FAO Representative in Sudan.
