FAO Representative


Appointment date:

With the agreement of the Government of the Republic of El Salvador, I have appointed Alan Roberto González Figueroa as FAO Representative in El Salvador, with effect from 20 December 2012. Mr González Figueroa, who is from Guatemala, is an Agricultural Engineer who graduated from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. He also holds a Masters in Natural Resource Sciences from the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Centre (CATIE), Turrialba, Costa Rica and a Doctorate in Earth Resources (Environmental and Natural Resource Planning and Management) from the Department of Earth Resources of the Colorado State University in the United States. Mr González Figueroa began his career in 1980 as a technician in the Soil Department of the National Institute for Agrarian Transformation (INTA) in Guatemala. In 1982 he became a researcher (Landsat images) for the Project on Natural Resource Studies of the National Geographical Institute of Guatemala. From 1983 to 1986 he was Head of the Land Use Section of the Geographical Studies Division of the Geographical Military Institute of Guatemala. In 1989 he was appointed CEO of a Guatemalan natural resource consultancy (CRN), and from 1995 to 1998 he was General Manager of the environmental services firm EDESA, in Guatemala. From April 1999 to August 2006 he worked in the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Centre (CATIE) in Costa Rica, where he performed various support functions for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Head of Technical Cooperation for the External Communication Programme (1999 – 2000); Director of the External Communication Programme (2000 – 2001); Director of Regional Technical Services (2002 – 2003); and Director of the External Communication Programme and Regional Technical Services (2004 – 2006). From 2006 to March 2011 he acted as Regional Advisor for Mesoamerica and the Caribbean for the Global Mechanism of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) based in Turrialba, Costa Rica. In 2011, Mr González Figueroa was appointed FAO Representative in the Republic of Ecuador. Alan Roberto González Figueroa takes over from Pedro Pablo Peña Cruz as FAO Representative in El Salvador.
